What To Know About Outlet Repairs

What to know about outlet repairs

Older homes will often have problems at the electrical outlet. Some homeowners report that one of the outlets seems blocked. Outlets can get loose as well to where the plug won't stay in. There are times when all the existing outlets need to be replaced.

Our Canton Electricians at Anything Electric have put together some information that covers a few Outlet Repair basics. If you have questions or need outlet repairs in Canton, just give us a call and we'll be glad to help you out.

Replace Old Aluminum Wiring In Outlets

Existing aluminum wiring poses a serious fire risk to you and your family if present in your home. At your outlet connections, they compose a high risk of failure that can create a fire hazard.

Unfortunately, many homes built prior to 1965 are likely to contain aluminum wiring because copper was at a shortage during that period of development.

You will want to replace or repair aluminum wiring, and you will want a professional to do it for you. Our Canton electrical engineers can evaluate your current wiring at your outlets and determine what materials were used in your home.

Converting To GFCI Outlets

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. It is a type of outlet that will trigger an automatic shut-off and reset switch so that electricity is cut off. If it detects an alternate path of electricity, say through your wet hands, the unit will switch off.

You may need to replace some of your existing outlets to a GFCI outlet. Regular outlets are not safe to use if:

  • They will be used by an electrical device that holds water
  • If they are located near a water source

If an outlet Goes Dead, you will need an electrician to repair it. Here are several reasons an outlet may be dead:

  • Tripped GFCI switches
  • Tripped breakers
  • Loose connections or wires at the outlet
  • Improperly installed or improperly repaired outlet

You may need to repair an existing outlet if it goes dead. But before assuming the outlet actually needs repair, be sure to check any other GFCI outlet reset switches and check the main panel to see if there is a tripped GFCI breaker. Not all homes in Canton or elsewhere have a GFCI breaker at the panel box.

You may also have had an outlet installed or repaired incorrectly. It is very dangerous not to have a licensed and experienced electrician work with your electrical systems and outlets or to try to do the work yourself. It is simply not worth the risk of a fire or possible life threatening electrical shock.

Replacing Old Outlets That Don't Fit New Appliances

You may purchase a new dryer or dishwasher that requires a different type of electrical outlet.

It's exciting to get a new appliance, however sometimes you bring it home and you can't even plug it in to try it out because the plug doesn't fit the outlet! There are several reasons you may need to replace the outlet, even if it is working fine:

  • Your new appliance has a 4 prong plug but your outlet is 3 prong
  • Your outlet is 4 prong (in newer homes) but you purchase an older appliance
  • You want to install a hot-tub or other device that requires more electricity than the outlet accommodates
